The challenge was to read 6 or more books over the summer holidays, with the challenge broken down into three Olympics like stages of bronze, silver and gold for reading 2, 4 and 6 books respectively.
At the start of the summer they were given a Summer Reading Challenge pack. This year's theme was Story Lab which contained the stories of 5 colourful characters who are trying to find 3 lost items with a link to the 2012 Olympics.
To find each lost item for them you had to read and return 2 books. The first two enabled you to recover an ancient bronze coin from the vault beneath the museum, the second two enabled you to find an silver mirror on the banks of the river and reading the 2 final books enabled you to pick up a gold medal from the Olympic Park. There were also matching stickers given to the kids as incentives at each stage.
From a parent's point of view the challenge is excellent as it focuses the children on reading for pleasure rather than for school work. Statistics indicate that The Summer Reading Challenge now accounts for 20% of all books issued annually in UK libraries which is incredible given that the challenge is only in it's third year.
This idea really hit home with my girls and they were desperate to take part in the challenge. The staff at Moredun Library were very patient and kind and arranged a special presentation last week at which all the 150 or so kids who completed the challenge were given a certificate and a medal.
